A Dunnock in Winter

The Dunnock (Prunella modularis)

There is something about a Dunnock in Winter that makes it more attractive to view. Although there is a slight variation in colour in the two images here, that is down to the light at the time. However the markings appear to me to stand out more at this time. Perhaps its because of the surroundings (the dull brown of dead foliage) make it stand out. In Spring and Summer there is so much more colour in the background.

  1. We have a Dunnock in the garden all year round, it's not happy with the Robin who has just popped back for winter as the Robin is very bossy ! and will not let him near the feeders... Great shots.

  3. Like moorhens, attractive birds under-rated because of their ubiquity

  4. I love their song most of all, but it's always lovely to see these birds about. Some people think they are just brown and boring, which is very far from true as your great images prove.

    1. Yes Suzie, the male singing from the top of a bush in Spring has got to be heard.

  5. They are one of my favourite birds, and I agree the light on winter days does make them especially striking - I'm charmed by their pinky red legs too.

  6. It's lovely Roy, is that the same bird in your header? I wasn't sure because of the coloring but then remembered what you said about the lighting.

  8. Lovely photos and a nice thought (actually just occurred to me!) that it won't be too long before the birds start singing again. I've heard song thrushes singing as early as January on a sunny day..... :-)

  11. Lovely clear images of your Dunnock. I like these birds, they are one of my regular visitors in my garden. When my neighbours ripped up their hedge I was concerned the Dunnocks would disappear, they did for a while but have returned.
